The Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Council, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, has advocated for the creation of a special commission to cater to the needs of physically challenged persons in society, as reported by Punch.

The emir made the call in his palace in Ilorin during an advocacy visit by members of the Voice of Disability Initiative, a civil society organization, on Saturday. He said the needs of people living with disabilities would be adequately addressed if a special commission or agency was created for them by the government.

Sulu-Gambari advised the organization to ensure that a special commission was created by the government for the special needs.

He said, “Your organisation can mount pressure on the government to create an agency to cater to the needs of your members and you can even sponsor a bill in the National Assembly to create a special commission that will cater to your people because your members are so special in the society.”

The Emir, who was represented by the Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, Dr Atolagbe Abubakar Jos, commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his efforts in caring for the underprivileged in society.

“The governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has been doing wonderfully well in caring for the plight of the disabled and has won several awards for his love and passion for these acts,” he said.

The Executive Director of the Voice of Disability Initiative, Edeh Chinyere, said she was not born a disabled person but became disabled at a tender age.

“That is the reason I'm much involved in the fight against gender-based violence against women and children, especially those living with disability,” she said.

Edeh applauded the governor for his inclusive governance, making the disabled relevant and for making them gainfully employed.
