KWSG sealed off 15 dilapidated houses in Ilorin

Owners and occupants of dilapidated buildings in Ilorin metropolis have been called upon to as matter of urgency vacate or renovate when necessary so as to prevent the incidence of building collapse as it soon starts to rain.

The state Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Bode Olayemi made call  yesterday in his office shortly after the inspection of some falling houses in Ilorin metropolis by the state Town Planning and Development authority (TPDA).

Olayemi who said it is the responsibility of government to protect lives and property of citizenry, maintained that the inspection exercise became necessary in order to avert causality might arise as a result of building collapse.

The Commissioner implored the developer to always maintain standard by avoiding  the use of substandard materials and get proper approval at all stages of development so as to come up with strong and duly certified structure.

He warned that any developer that fails to follow the directive of government as far as construction exercise is concerned will face the full wrath of law.

In his comments, the Executive Secretary of TPDA, Alhaji Raimi Adeoti  said the rationale behind the awareness exercise was to inform the occupants of dilapidated houses of the need to evacuate before the house collapses.

"It is our responsibility to mark buildings that are not habitable for human beings. What we have done so far is to call them to order for them to vacate the houses and call the attention of the property owners to prepare such structures and where it is not separable, we asked them to evacuate and demolish the building and build a very solid structure that will be habitable for human beings.

The inspection team which was led by the TPDA, Mr Adeoti visited dilapidated houses in Edun, lower Taiwo, Isale Aluko, Ojagbooro, Amule among others.
