Medical Practitioners Plan Protest March in Ilorin
Kwara State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), is planning a protest march next Tuesday in Ilorin, the state capital in honour of its departed colleague, Dr. Ariyo Adewunmi, who was killed last Thursday by unknown gunmen.
The association called on the state government and its relevant agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the act, lamenting that since the beginning of the year, 10 medical practitioners have been attacked.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin yesterday, the state chairman of NMA, Dr. Mikhail Buhari, said medical practitioners are endangered and vulnerable to armed attacks due to their late night work schedules.
“It’s a fact that since the beginning of the year, no less 10 medical practitioners have lost their vehicles to carjacking and thefts, either at their place of work or while transiting to and from work. By the nature of our work, we operate odd schedule. We need the state Ministry of Health and the Kwara State government to revamp the security arrangements in hospitals and properly secure the lives and property of patients and staff. Only those who are safe can save the lives of others”, he said.
Buhari, who said members of the association, except those on essential services, would stage a march around Ilorin state capital next Tuesday, added that the march would not be confrontational but as a mark of honour for the departed colleague.
