Alleged Goat Theft: Court grants ex-councillor's wife bail

Date: 2017-02-07

Wife of a former councillor in Kwara State, Mrs Roseline Aremu who was accused of stealing no fewer than 30 goats in Omu-Aran and its environs has reportedly been granted bail by the Magistrate court of the community on Friday, National Pilot can report.

Her bail was reportedly stalled on Wednesday due to the absence of the trial judge, Samuel Fagbemi, when her counsel filed papers at the court. Attempt to speak with her last night proved abortive as her husband, Hon Samuel Olanrewaju Aremu, declined our reporter speaking with his wife on the phone.

Aremu did not also respond to text message sent to his phone immediately and he terminated subsequent calls even though there was indication that the message was read. Remanded in Omu-Aran by a magistrate court, Mrs Aremu was held in Oke-Kura Prison yard, Ilorin because of lack of female facilities in her community.

The case was adjourned to 8th February, 2017, but her counsel had reportedly moved a motion to bail her since the case was a "bail able offence", a source familiar with the matter said last night.

The ex-councillor's wife was arrested penultimate week by men of the Kwara State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Omu-Aran for allegedly stealing over 30 life goats in the community and its environs.

It was gathered that the alleged culprit, called 'Mama G'' (Mama Goat) was arrested penultimate Sunday following a tip off by some residents who had long complained about their missing domestic animal.

About 30 life goats were allegedly found in her residence when NSCDC officials in the community combed her house.

A source had told National Pilot in Ilorin that over 15 residents identified their goats during the search.

Mrs Aremu's husband is a former councillor who served during the first tenure of ex-governor of the state, Dr Bukola Saraki under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He had earlier confirmed the arrest of his wife over the incident before declining further comment last night.

The traditional rulers of her ward in Oko, Oba Victor Olawuyi and Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Charles Ibitoye (not Oloro of Oro as earlier reported) were said to have rejected pressures from her friends and family to bury the case.
