Police on trail of arms' manufacturer

Date: 2014-10-17

The Kwara State Police Command said it might seek the cooperation of international police to assist in arresting a suspected arms' manufacturer based in Dahomey, Benin Republic.

It was gathered that some arms recovered from criminals in the state were supplied by the manufacturer who is based in Dahomey.

The state Police Commissioner, Saliu Garba, said the command is waiting for the outcome of investigation on the sources of some other arms before taking further action.

The police had on Wednesday paraded some suspected criminals, from whom firearms were recovered.

The recovery came amidst concerns by stakeholders over the proliferation of arms and ammunition in the state, especially Ilorin, the state capital.

The commissioner said: "The manufacturer is in Dahomey and we are investigating the matter. This may involve the Interpol, because we don't have the capacity to do that. We cannot cross our own border without informing Interpol".

Garba said the command has started recovering cache of arms in the state, saying the proliferation of arms is a source of worry, especially as the 2015 election draws close.
