LMC set to rule on Kwara and Wolves
The League Management Company (LMC) is expected to decide on the botched Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game this week.
The Kwara United versus Warri Wolves was discontinued on Saturday following crowd disturbance at the Kwara State Stadium.
It was alleged that one of the assistant referees, Andy Ubani from Abia, was attacked and beaten up by fans at the Kwara stadium just after the first half had ended goalless.
The LMC, which is the administrative arm of the top flight in Nigeria, has stated that it is "now awaiting the match commissioner's report" before a decision would be taken.
"Kwara Utd v Warri Wolves game has now been discontinued. Score was still 0-0 when it was called off. Kwara United vs Warri Wolves abandoned because of fans unsportsmanlike conduct. Now awaiting the Match Commissioner's report," stated the LMC via its official Twitter handle.
The Chief Operating Officer of the LMC, Mallam Salihu Abubakar, has promised that the decision will be made according to dictates from the rule book.
"We are awaiting the report of the match commissioner. Every decision will be taken in accordance with the rules of the league," Abubakar said.
However, supersport.com's check on the league rules revealed that the offending club face a fine of N5 million for "intimidation and harassment of match officials by clubs supporter(s)/fans or club officials before, during, or after pre-match meetings."
Article 3.7(1) states: "Intimidation and harassment of match officials by clubs supporter(s)/fans or club officials before, during, or after pre-match meetings is strictly prohibited and attracts a fine of Five Million Naira only (N5, 000, 000.00), payable before the club's next home match."
The offending club also stand the risk of having three points and three goals "deducted from the already accrued points" if found culpable in intimidating match officials.
"Upon receipt of the Match Commissioner's report, 3 points 3 goals shall be deducted from the already accrued points of the offending team, and the opponent shall be credited with 3 points and 3 goals," Article 3.7(3) clearly states in the league rule.
Kwara United in a statement at the weekend blamed Warri Wolves for their "desperate antics" in the abandoned match.
But Wolves have kept mum in the wake of the melee in Ilorin.
Apart from facing a fine of N5 million and deduction of points and goals already accrued, the host club could be "banned to a neutral ground to play their matches for the rest of the season," according to Article 4.3(1).
