Date: 2013-08-01

The Technical Committee on Annual State Ranking on Road Safety in Kwara State has carried a two-day inspection on road across the state and some agencies as part of efforts to reduce road accident in the state and Nigeria at large.

The agencies visited were the State Board of Internal Revenue, Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWATMA) and Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), while some roads inspected include Malete in Kwara North, Goman-Afon road among others.

Speaking after the inspection, the Sectary of the committee who is also the Kwara State Road Safety Commandant, Mary Wakawa said the inspection was to observe the impact of State, Local and Federal government in construction and rehabilitation of road across the state.

According to her, the local government and state have about two third of road network in the nation, if the nation wait for Federal Government alone much would not be achieved, so all the state governments including FCT must buy-in to in the construction and maintenance of roads.

She added that the United Nations had reported that road traffic crashes had become epidemic in which certain method of action on reduction of the crash must be taken.

Wakawa said that the development would enable both local and state governments to be aware that someone is monitoring their activities.

She noted that Nigeria being third world country facing such problem should be able to bring down road traffic to fifty per cent by the year 2020.

The committee includes Dr Lare Ajibade of the department of Geography, University of Ilorin as chairman, Kwara State chapter of Nigeria Bar Association, Engineering sector amongst others.
