Group Opposes Voting On Hijab

Date: 2013-04-02

Ilorin - Al- Mu'minaat, a women religious organisation, has opposed the subjection of hijab usage among secondary schools to voting or any form of deliberation.

Leader of the group Hajia Risquat Usama said the use of hijab (Islamic veil) by Muslim ladies is an Islamic mode of dressing enjoined by Allah and therefore Muslims should be allowed to practise their religion.

She spoke at the opening of the 17th edition of Al-Mu'minaat Training Forum organised for young Muslim ladies in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

There has been controversy over the propriety of using hijab in secondary schools in Lagos State with many Muslim organisations kicking against the move as an infringement on the fundamental right of Muslims to practise their religion.

Adding her voice to the matter, Hajia Risquat Usama described the move to ban the use of hijab as "contravening the fundamental principle of the Sharia".

"It is the fundamental right of Muslims to dress in accordance to their religion hence no government has the right to violate such rights".
