Issa Aremu Warns Media Against Giving Terrorists Oxygen of Publicity After Woro Massacre
Comrade Issa Aremu, Director-General of the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), has cautioned journalists against sensational reportage that confers undeserved publicity on bandits and terrorists in the wake of the deadly attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Speaking on the sidelines of his electronic membership registration with the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Baboko Ward, Ilorin West LGA, Aremu said professional ethics, balance, and sobriety are required in covering terrorist attacks that trigger humanitarian crises.
A member of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, he observed that media coverage often shapes public perception and urged journalists to remain measured and avoid giving terrorists the "oxygen of publicity" that amplifies fear and inadvertently advances their evil agenda.
Instead of dwelling on gory details of death and destruction, Aremu urged the media to spotlight the resilience of affected communities and the commendable responses of the Kwara State Government and the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu.
While praising the prompt deployment of security forces and humanitarian aid to the victims, he called for intensified preventive action through timely intelligence utilisation.
Aremu advocated a development-driven approach to combating terrorism, insisting: "There are three solutions to terrorism: development, development and development."
He proposed reclaiming ungoverned spaces through industries, agri-allied enterprises, schools, roads, electrification, and massive youth employment to make young people less vulnerable to extremist recruitment.
