Kwara State Government and UNICEF Empower Former Borstal Inmates with Diverse Skills Training
As reported by TVC News, the Kwara State government, in partnership with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), has provided empowerment opportunities for 32 children who were formerly in Borstal centers (detention facilities) due to various alleged offenses.
The empowerment initiative targeted the second group of individuals released from the Borstal Training Institution in Ganmo between April 1, 2022, and December 31, 2023. Among the 103 adolescents who had served time for crimes such as theft and rape, 65 underwent assessments, with 32 receiving training in 18 diverse skill sets. The primary goal is to facilitate the reintegration of these individuals into society.
The beneficiaries were equipped with tools and kits for trades including electrical works, events planning, fashion designing, bricklaying, tailoring, metalworks (welding), IT (computer skills), aluminum works, vulcanizing, wiring, clothes weaving (Aso Oke), photography, solar installation, and more.
During the empowerment program, Abosede Buraimoh, the Kwara state commissioner for Social Development, advised the recipients to utilize the equipment effectively. Buraimoh emphasized that the kits should not be sold but rather utilized to enhance their own lives and contribute positively to society.
