Kwara State Police Nab 24-Year-Old Man for Fake Abduction Extortion
According to a report from Daily Trust, the Kwara State Police Command has apprehended a 24-year-old man, Wasiu Afolabi, for allegedly extorting his parents, family members, and friends by faking his own abduction and demanding a N3 million ransom.
The command's spokeswoman, Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, revealed in a statement that the suspect collaborated with his elder brother, Lekan Afolabi, and a POS agent named Moshood Sulaiman to carry out the scheme.
The statement explained, “On March 17th, 2024, a worrisome case of self-kidnapping was reported when Lekan Afolabi from Amayo town reported that his 24-year-old younger brother, Wasiu Afolabi, was allegedly abducted. Following a ransom demand of N3 million and after a series of negotiations with the kidnappers, they agreed to accept N500,000 with an initial installment of N200,000.
“However, investigation by the command led to the arrest of the suspect. It was discovered that the suspect orchestrated his own kidnapping to extort money for personal use.
“The police also arrested Moshood Sulaiman, a POS agent from the Oyun area, Ilorin, who facilitated the financial transaction.”
