FG to Adopt PPP Framework in Management of Kampe Dam
The Minister of State for Power, Mr. Darius Ishaku, has stated that the option of Public Private Partnership (PPP) would be applied for full utilisation of Kampe dam in agriculture, water supply, and mini hydro power plant.
Ishaku who disclosed this during his inspection of irrigation projects in Niger, Kogi and Kwara States said that Kampe dam was constructed at the cost of N68 million by Niko Engineering Limited, an indigenous engineering firm during the second republic but inuaguarted in 1999 by former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar (Rtd).
He noted that government would like to enter into agreement with any private company interested in investing in the dam, either for agriculture, water or electricity supply.
The dam has an electricity generation capacity of two megawatts which could be used to power cottage industries as well as enhance irrigation in the area.
The minister added that government alone cannot fund the project and is therefore willing to provide enabling environment for PPP framework.
Managing Director of Lower Niger River Basin Development Authority (LNRBDA), Mr. Abubakar Aduragba, explained that the dam provides water supply up to Ilorin and Kabba with additional capacity to employ over 5000 graduates on subsistence agriculture other than the electricity it could generate.
