One dead as Asa river overflows

Date: 2014-09-21

Asa River in Afon, the headquarters of Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State has overflown its bank claiming one life.

This was disclosed by the member representing Afon constituency in the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Giwa Afolabi.

Sunday Trust reports that the channelization of the river is ongoing by the Federal Ministry of Environment covering parts of Ilorin metropolis where the river has usually caused destruction of lives and property after overflowing its banks.

Residents have expressed concern over the delay in the dredging and channelization work, calling on the contractors to expedite action to prevent loss of lives and property.

Speaking under a matter of urgent public importance at Thursday's plenary, the lawmaker warned that the river could claim more lives if urgent steps were not taken to complete the dredging work.

The legislator, who gave the name of the deceased as Mallam AbdulRasaq Nuhu, described the overflow of the river as unprecedented and unfortunate. He stated that residents of Afon where the deceased hailed from are still mourning the death of their loved one.

Afolabi told the House that the overflow had made the only bridge linking Afon with other communities virtually impassable for both motorists and pedestrians, saying the situaton had paralysed social and economic activities of Afon since goods could not be moved within the communities.

Deputy Speaker, Prof Gana Yissa who presided over the plenary directed the House Committee on Energy, Works and Transport to examine the problem that caused the overflow and report to the House by Tuesday, 23 September 2014.
