Woman arraigned for kidnapping a month old baby
A 21-year-old woman, Ronke Odelabi of Ile-Onisa, Kolara Area, Ogbomosho, Oyo State, was arraigned before an Ilorin Chief Magistrate's Court for allegedly kidnapping a month-old-baby.
The accused was said to have absconded with the baby belonging to her neighbour and went to her parent-in-law at Ogbomosho to deceive them that she had given birth to a baby.
The mother of the child, Funke Olowokere had lodged a complaint at ‘C' Divisional Police Headquarters, Oja-Oba, Ilorin, that on February 2 she gave her child (name withheld) to the accused, who is her co-tenant, while she was busy washing clothes.
According to the mother, when she finished washing, she discovered that the accused has absconded with the child to unknown destination and that all effort to contact her through her phone number proved abortive.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that during investigation, it was discovered that the accused kept the baby with one Odunola Adeyanju in Ogbomosho, where the police arrested her with the child.
The FIR added that investigation conducted at State CID, Ilorin revealed that the accused took the child to her parent-in-law that she gave birth to the child.
The accused was arraigned before the court on a one-count charge of kidnapping, contrary to Section 273 of the Penal Code Law.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Nasiru Yusuf informed the court that investigation into the matter was yet to be completed. He objected to the bail of the accused and urged the court to remand her in prison custody pending the determination of the case.
The court refused the oral application of the prosecutor and released the accused on bail at the sum of N200,000 and two sureties in the same amount.
The court also held that one of the sureties must be a Grade Level 10 officer in the Kwara State Civil Service.
The case was adjourned to March 18, this year for further mention.
