Court Remands 3 Suspected Armed Robbers
An Ilorin Chief Magistrates' Court has ordered three suspected armed robbers to be remanded in prison custody till March 29.
The suspects, Afolabi Dele, 25, and Shuaib Nasiru, 23, were charged with criminal conspiracy and armed robbery, while the third accused, Rasheed Kazeem, 35, was arraiged for allegedly receiving stolen property.
Police said that the charges contravened sections 97 of the Penal Code, 1(2) and 5 of the armed robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act of the Federation.
The first two accused were alleged to have robbed one Moshood Mohammed of Ogidi Oloje area of Ilorin on Dec. 12, 2011 with guns and other dangerous weapons.
Insp. Moshood Adebayo, the Prosecuting Police Officer, told the court that the duo, alongside their accomplices, now at large, robbed the victim of his Toyota Camry car valued at N1.2 million at gun point.
Adebayo said the suspects also dispossesed the victim of two LG flat screen television valued at N185, 000, home theatre video player, computer laptop with printer, Digital cameras, a blackberry handset among other items.
The prosecutor explained that the stolen blackberry phone was traced to one Olagunju Tunrayo and she was arrested with her boyfriend, who was the first accused person that sold the phone to her.
He said: "investigation also led to the arrest of another member of the robbery gang, Shuaib Nasiru and the alleged receiver of the stolen car, Rasheed Kazeem.
"During interrogation, Nasiru 'voluntarily' confessed to the robbery and mentioned the first suspect, Afolabi and some other members, now at large as his co-perpetrators."
He added that Nasiru was clearly identified by the victim without hesitation during an idenfication parade at the Kwara State Police Command Headquarters.
The prosecutor objected to the bail of the accused on the ground that investigation was ongoing, urging the court to remand the accused person in custody, pending the conclusion of the investigation.
He prayed the court to remand the 1st and 2nd accused persons in the Federal Prison, Ilorin while the 3rd accused person should be remanded with the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), as he was assisting the police in their investigation.
