AFN Lifts Suspension on Golden League; Next Edition Holds in Ilorin
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), has lifted the suspension placed on its Golden League following pleas from eminent sports personalities.
Technical Director of the AFN, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, confirmed to THISDAY Thursday that the federation has accepted the apology tendered by the athletes involved in the disruption of the Benin leg of the 2013 edition.
"The suspension we placed on the Golden League following the disruption of the Benin City edition by some athletes has been lifted. We are resuming the league next week with the Ilorin edition," observed the AFN technical director.
He also confirmed that all the clubs that have accepted the rules governing the Golden League are free to send in their entries for the next edition in Ilorin.
"Apart from the three athletes that we banned for three years from all AFN competitions, all the others have been pardoned to return. The rules and standards that we set for athletes to achieve to earn the prize money are still in place," stressed the AFN chief.
After the first leg which held in Sagamu last month, some of the athletes revolted against the standard put in place by the AFN to shore up the quality of competition from the home-based athletes.
But the federation reacted by picking out the ring leaders and slammed them with three years ban respectively.
Meanwhile, the AFN technical director Thursday warned the the 54 athletes and 16 officials invited for camping ahead of the 11th African Junior Championships to strictly adhere to camp rules.
Nesiama said that the camping, scheduled to open on May 13, would hold at the IAAF High Performance Centre (HPC) at the University of Port Harcourt.
"Athletes and officials should maintain strict camp rules and discipline. I urge them to abide by the code of conduct,’’ he said.
The African Junior Championships is scheduled to hold in Pretoria, South Africa between June 27 and June 30, to select qualifiers for the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships.
