KWASU's Governing Council Inaugurated
A new Governing Council for Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has been inaugurated with the charge to make good governance the foundation of its policy formulations.The Kwara State Commissioner of Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Hajia Sa'adatu Modibo Kawu gave this charge in an address she delivered at the inauguration ceremony held on Friday, 8th of May 2020 at the Ministry.
Hajia Modibo Kawu emphasised that the Council's policy formulations should set the tone and direction from which the University's administration will draw strength, adding that good governance is a necessary foundation which the Council must engender.
She called on the inaugurated members to device innovative ways of raising funds to execute institutional objectives, missions and vision while being ready to maximise the benefits of any partnership in terms of reasonable investment, endorsement, research grants, and industrial partnership to augment any inflow from the State government.
Hajia Modibo Kawu also tasked the Council to be committed to repositioning the Institution to produce skilled and knowledgeable manpower capable of addressing day to day societal problems. While pointing out that the Council must ensure best practices and standards that will promote the welfare of members of the University Community, she demanded higher productivity and accountability from all stakeholders to ensure that graduates from the Institution stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers anywhere in the world.
She added that the present administration in the state made education one of its topmost agenda in recognition of the importance of the sector to the development of the state affirming that institutions of higher learning must focus on knowledge generation that will advance human society.
The Commissioner congratulated the new Council members on their appointment, noting that their appointments were based on their past contributions and commitment to the development of education in their various fields.
In his response, the Chairman of KWASU's Governing Council, Professor Kpotun Baba Mohammed stressed that the Council will ensure that the world class status of KWASU is not compromised adding that the council will add value to the University through suitable policy formulation and adequate supervision of the growth of the Institution.
He pledged that the new Council will bring their collective experiences to bear in the drive to make the University one of the foremost tertiary institutions in the country assuring that the supervisory ministry will be carried along in the drive to move KWASU to the next level.
The Chairman expressed appreciation to the Governor of Kwara State for the appointment of the new council members and pledged on their behalf to justify the confidence reposed in them.
The newly inaugurated Council members are Professor Kpotun Baba Mohammed as Chairman; Professor Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi (SAN); Professor Hassan Ajisafe Saliu; Dr. Mrs Mary Ronke Arinde; Mallam Abdullahi Issa Biogera, and Honourable Suleiman Issa.
Others are Colonel Babatunde Lawal Ishola (Rtd.); Gesinde Adedeji Amosa; and, Mallam Mohammed Shuaib who is the Secretary to the Council.
Meanwhile, at the inaugural meeting of the Council held at the KWASU Contact Office in Ilorin, the newly constituted body approved the use of the Faculty system for the Institution. This replaces the collegiate system hitherto used at the University since inception.
