'Science, only solution to Nigeria's problem'
Vice-Chancellor of University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali and a renowned Professor of Chemistry, Joshua Obaleye have called on the Federal Government to deploy science in tackling the myriads of problems confronting the nation.
According to them, the effective deployment of science would go a long way in addressing the socio-political challenges drawing Nigeria back as a nation.
They spoke during the 3rd Greater Scientists' Workshop organised for Junior secondary school students by the university.
The workshop started in 2010 for some select secondary schools in Kwara State to stimulate students' interest in sciences.
The VC who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Professor Yisa Fakunle said, "A nation that refuses to pay serious attention to science will find it difficult to grow and if care is not taken such a nation would soon collapse because the whole of human development is founded by science".
He explained that the university instituted the workshop to catch the students young by exposing them to science from their formative ages.
Obaleye who is the Chairman, Greater Scientists' Committee and former Dean of Science, said, "We have a lot of problems and the only thing that can solve our problems in Nigeria is science. If the government understands science, what is happening will not be happening".
The scholar called on government to invest in science and technology as done by China and other developed nations which he noted invested heavily on science to attain their present heights, adding, "Finance is killing science in Nigeria".
