Kwara targets N1b IGR

Date: 2014-06-06

The Chairman of Kwara State Board of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Mudasiru Oladapo, yesterday said the board was targeting N1 billion internally generated revenue yearly.

Oladapo made this known in an interview with the News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.

He said  the state was presently generating about N800 million annually as internally generated revenue.

The chairman said that to achieve this, the board would carry out a system reform of the revenue generation drive of the state.

According to him, a Joint Revenue Committee (JRC) was recently constituted to look into the various issues concerning  taxation in the state.

Oladapo, who was also the chairman of the JRC, said the board would harmonise  revenue collection to shore up the  revenue base of the state.

He  appealed to the state government to intensify its  publicity and awareness campaign to sensitise the people on their civic responsibility of tax payment.

Oladapo said it was the constitutional function of local government councils in the country to register births  and deaths  and collect rate on them.

According to the Chairman, it was not the duty of the National Population Commission (NPC) to collect  rates on births  and deaths.

He said that local government function was enshrined in the 1999 Constitution and was supreme to the  Act of Parliament which established the NPC.

Oladapo also described as misconception the issue of multiple taxation in the state, saying:

“There is nothing wrong with multiple taxes but what the people really seem to complain about is duplication of taxes.

“That is, paying same taxes to several levels of government,” Oladapo said.
