Rainstorm destroys houses in Kwara

Date: 2020-06-01

A downpour, accompanied by storm, on Saturday night destroyed property and goods worth millions of Naira in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The rains, which started around 9pm, blew off rooftops of buildings, including the one housing the popular Olufunmilayo Records on Muritala Mohammed Way, Ilorin.

The storm dumped the rooftops of the building on the rail line, 50 metres away behind the building, damaging some of the gauges.

The owner of the recording company, Evangelist Adedayo Agboola, said: "It is very tragic, but God gave reasons for gratitude. I am grateful to God that no life was lost in the disaster.

"It is a very tragic, unexpected disaster. I've never experienced this kind of thing since I have been here. I came in here since 1971 and such a thing has never happened, but the scriptures admonish us to give thanks always in every situation."

Other victims bemoaned their fate and counted losses.

Hadijat, a single mother living at the residential part of the building, said she had been struggling to survive as a result of the COVID-19 lockdown, lamenting: "Why this again? May God forgive me if I sound sinful, but this is too painful."

Forcing back tears, she implored the government and individuals to assist them.
