Kwara LG pensioners lament negligence as 10 die in 6 months

Date: 2016-06-20

Retired Local Government workers as well as primary and Junior Secondary School teachers in Kwara State have lamented 'negligence' by the state government which they said has led to the death of over 10 of their members within the last six months.

They announced that not less than 50 others who were stricken by varying ailments, including heart diseases, were now close to death because they had no money to buy drugs.

The pensioners led by their Chairman, Alhaji Isiaka Akanbi and Secretary, Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji on Friday staged a procession of about 400 members to the Governor's Office where they met with the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Isiaka Gold to lodge complaints bothering on alleged discrimination against them by the government.

The pensioners, while speaking to Daily Trust, said they held monthly meetings to review their ordeals and had earlier issued a communiqué in which they called on government to pay arrears of pensions from September to December 2015 and January to April 2016.

The spokesman of the pensioners, Comrade Olusola Dosunmu, said that government at a point this year handpicked a minute number and paid them staggered percentages of their pensions, something which he said robbed even those selected for payment larger percentages of their pensions.
