UNILORIN to increase admission quota

University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, is pushing to admit more students next academic session, provided the National Universities Commission, NUC, approves its request for increase in its admission quota. Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali, dropped this hint while featuring on a Radio Nigeria, Harmony FM current affairs programme, "Our Guest" in Idofian, Kwara State. The institution had for over a decade been oversubscribed by student applicants, who for some time now, made the admission ratio of admitted students to the number of applicants very low. The development, which is also applicable in other universities, according to Ambali, has been "a serious concern to universities in the country, admission seekers and their parents".

The vice chancellor added that "for instance, out of more than 103,000 candidates that applied to study in the University of Ilorin in the 2015/2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, only 11, 057 could be admitted due to low admission quota granted the most subscribed university by the regulatory bodies." Fielding questions on the live radio programme during a phone-in section, Ambali noted that the management of the university was seriously worried that most Nigerian youths could not gain admission into their choice institutions due to the low carrying capacity of Nigerian universities.

While commenting on the rumour that the University of Ilorin had released its cut-off marks for the 2016/2017 admission exercise, the Vice- Chancellor disclosed that no institution in Nigeria will announce its cut-off mark until, JAMB and NUC determine the national cut-off marks. Ambali said the University of Ilorin would only announce its cut-off marks after the meeting of all tertiary education institutions in the country with the NUC and JAMB. He, however, warned desperate admission seekers to be wary of scammers, saying the university's admission was not for sale pointing out that the university management had put in place, a very stiff punishment for any of its staff caught engaging in dirty deals.
