Saraki - Loyalists, Antagonists Set to Renew War

Date: 2016-02-15

The graveyard peace in the Senate may be shattered on tuesday when the parliament resumes plenary after a two-week break.

Independent newspapers gathered that the loyalists of Senate President Bukola Saraki and his antagonists would square up in the chambers as speculations had been rife of an impending move to call for his removal.

The move to remove Saraki was reignited following a Supreme Court judgement the penultimate week, which demobilised Saraki in his multi-dimensional legal schemes to stop his trial for improper assets declaration and perjury at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Abuja.

Senators opposed to Saraki are reported to have held several meetings perfecting strategies to get him impeached when plenary resumes on Tuesday. Saraki's antagonists, who are largely members of his ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been battling him relentlessly since June 2015 when he outmanouvered them against the favoured candidate of the party, Senator Ahmed Lawan, who is a representative from Yobe State.

Will the plot by Senators of the Unity Forum be hatched as being planned?

A dependable source at the Senate confirmed to this newspaper in confidence that some members of the Saraki-Must-Go caucus had started reaching out to their colleagues including those who are perceived as "nominal" supporters of Saraki from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

A major strategy they are working on, according to the source, is to concede the position to another senator among Saraki's supporter in the APC caucus.

The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) had accused Saraki of lying about his assets and maintaining a foreign account when he was Governor of Kwara State between 2003 and 2011. Saraki and his supporters said the charges were politically motivated while he challenged the powers and composition of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to hear the case.

Approaching the Appeal Court, he sought the permission of the court to pronounce the bench warrant issued on him by the CCT illegal just as he urged the Appeal Court to explain if any other person, other than the Attorney General of the Federation, could file criminal charges against him.

He urged the Court of Appeal to nullify the decisions of the Code of Conduct Tribunal for allegedly violating the decision of the high court. The Appeal Court dismissed his objections on October 30, 2015 by the Court of Appeal, thus affirming the powers of the tribunal to hear the charges against the Senate President.

November 4, 2015, the Senate President approached the Supreme Court seeking the stoppage of his trial by the CCT. But the Apex Court in a judgement delivered on 5th February, insisted that the Senate President must face trial at the CCT.
