Mystery bullet kills teenager in Kwara
Police in Kwara State are working at unravelling the mystery surrounding a mysterious gunshot that killed a teenager, Ganiyat, of Alangua, in the Tanke area of Ilorin, the state capital
The unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, when a shot purportedly from a dane gun said to belong to one Baba Ria, who died about seven years ago, killed the ill-fated girl, who lived with her grandmother in the area.
A witness, who does not want his name in print and who lived in the neighbourhood, told Newswatch Times that the victim was playing with her peers and her younger siblings shortly after their mother departed from them.
"Ganiyat's mother came to pay a visit and this happened after her departure. The kids lived here with their grandmother. But early this morning (Saturday), Ganiyat, who was playing with her peers suddenly asked others to go away and shortly after she ran into the abandoned Ogun shrine (a local deity) in a room belonging to Baba Ria, a hunter and Ogun worshiper, where the gun had been since the man died seven years ago.
"No one knew what happened, until a deafening roar from a gun alerted everyone about 11.35am. We ran out only to see Ganiyat with her eyes bulging out in her pool of blood. Our neighbours rushed her to a nearby private hospital in Tanke, where she was confirmed dead," he explained.
Investigations also revealed that the deceased was reportedly kidnapped recently, but released after frantic efforts by the family even as the girl was said to exhibit strange behaviour bothering on the mystery until the sad incident.
When the Newswatch Times got to the scene, a crowd wearing long faces had gathered and were reluctant to speak on the subject, especially as men from Police 'F' Division rounded up every male in the house where the unfortunate incidence occurred.
When contacted for comments, the Command's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ajayi Okansanmi, who confirmed the incident, said investigations were on-going into the matter.
