Kwara FIRS generates N2.3bn in 2014

Date: 2015-02-18

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) last year generated a total of N2.3billion from tax payers in Kwara State, the state’s Tax Controller, Alhaji Aliyu Mahe has disclosed.

Speaking with our correspondent in Ilorin, the controller stated that the performance represented 82 per cent of the target given to the state.

He said “Our targets and collections between January to December in 2014 in the two offices-Ilorin Micro and Small Tax Office (MSTO) and the Ilorin Government Business Tax Office (GBTO) are as follows; target for MSTO was N428,995,682 and the collection was N323,222,554 which represent 75% of the target.

“The GBTO has the highest target of N2, 419,400,660 and a total collection of N2, 000,896,775 which represent 83% of the target.

“The total target for the two offices targeted was N2, 848,396,342 and total collection made is put at N2, 324,119,329 while the average performance percentage was 82% for the year.”

He stated that the service however faced difficulty in locating many micro and small tax payers.

“Most of the tax payers addresses are always difficult to locate. It is either they register residential or non-existing addresses. And this has been affecting our activities.

“Another challenge is that intermediaries don’t give true picture of tax-payers’ business activities.”

He said that those in-charge of GBTO encountered problems in tax collection from local governments, ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) with regards to contracts and withheld tax.
