111 Died in Road Crashes in Kwara in 2014 - FRSC
The Kwara Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday said that 111 persons died in 200 road accidents in the state in 2014.
The Sector Commander, Mrs Mary Wakawa, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin.
She also said that 659 people sustained injuries in road crashes during the year.
<>Wakawa said that the command's mobile court prosecuted 417 people for various traffic offences, while the command convicted 378 people and discharged 39 during the year under review. She told NAN that 2015 required greater attention because of the electioneering campaigns.
The sector commander identified speeding as the mostly committed traffic offence in the state.
"In Kwara, the traffic volume is not so huge to pose a threat.
"We will mount daily surveillance and carry out public enlightenment in collaboration with relevant agencies on the need to obey traffic rules," she said.
Wakawa said that the command achieved reduction in road crashes in 2014 more than in 2013.
She promised that the command would do better this year.
In another development, the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) on Wednesday donated an ambulance to the FRSC to boost the commission's response to crashes.
Mr Charles Okon, the Manager, Government-Relations in LNG, confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) after the presentation.
He said that the gesture was informed by the management's desire to improve its relations with the FRSC.
"Our parley with the commission will go a long way to positively affect the lives of Nigerians on the roads," he said.
Mr Godwin Ogagaoghene, the Zonal Commanding Officer, FRSC, also expressed the commission's appreciation to the LNG management.
"Many lives have been lost in the past due to unavailability of ambulances to convey victims to hospitals for instant medical assistance.
"So, we welcome this gesture, most especially, because this is our first ambulance in this command.
"It will, indeed, boost our operations and we urge other corporate bodies to emulate this gesture," Okon said.
The ambulance is equipped with two oxygen facilities and a stretcher, among others.
