Undergraduate organises voluntary teaching for special needs pupils

Date: 2015-01-01

A 400-level student of Anatomy, University of Ilorin, Segun Ayodele, has organised a Voluntary Teaching Scheme (VTS) for pupils of Kwara State School for Special Needs.

The scheme is a community service project designed by the student to assist special needs pupils especially the hearing impaired ones.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the scheme at the state owned School for Special Needs located along Old Jebba road, Ilorin, the undergraduate explained that the VTS started with mathematics which is a core subject needed by students to further their education.

He stated that his choice of mathematics was in realisation of the fact that physically challenged students are more affected by mass failure in maths.

"Mathematics is an indispensable subject without which no nation could contemplate progress or development,"he said.

Ayodele stressed that efforts must be made to assist the physically challenged pupils to cope with the subject.

He urged the students to be attentive, saying they should not feel inferior with their able counterparts.

The VTS is a platform created for final year students of University of Ilorin especially in the College of Health Sciences with the aim of supporting and strengthening teaching and learning at the School for Special Needs.
