APC caucus seeks Senate slot in Kwara South
A SUB-SECT within the Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) called "Legacy Group" has canvassed the zoning of Senate seat to its members in Kwara South.
In a statement yesterday by its coordinator, Kayode Olawepo, the caucus said if the demand was not considered, members could be easily wooed by the opposition ahead of the 2015 elections in the state.
The senatorial district, with seven local councils out of the state's 16, has produced the incumbent Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed. According to Olawepo, however, the race has become swift after the incumbent governor's recent endorsement for a second term by the state's APC leader, Senator Bukola Saraki, and other stakeholders.
"The Southern Senatorial District is significant to the leadership of the APC in Kwara State on many sides. One of such is the fact that the sitting senator from the area is the only senator out of the three who refused to come with Saraki into the APC," he said.
"The challenge the party will face in the area may be different and fiercer than that of North and Central Senatorial Districts. Therefore, the choice of a sellable and acceptable candidate by the APC should be the first area of concentration of the party's strategists to confront the impending challenges that the opposition may pose.
"In determining a sellable and acceptable candidate, the party may look into the following, among others: Evolve an acceptable zoning arrangement, considering the interest of the constituent entities within the party, ethnic standing, equitable sharing of other positions and other salient factors."
He added: "The first factor that can help the party to achieve rancour-free primaries is to evolve an acceptable zoning formula that takes into consideration the two federal constituencies within the senatorial district. Ifelodun/Oyun/Offa Federal Constituency should be allowed a shot at the Senate this time since the other end of Irepodun/Isin/Oke-Ero/Ekiti has occupied the seat for close to 14 years, which could simply be termed third term in office.
The group noted that it was aware of a subtle agreement or arrangement that the topmost echelon of the party will maintain the status quo in the North and Central Districts. That means, Saraki representing Kwara Central and his brother in Kwara North, Senator Mohammed Shabba Lafiagi, flying the party's flag again.
