Ilorin NBA crisis deepens

Date: 2014-08-04

The crisis rocking the Ilorn branch of the Nigerian Bar Association deepened on Monday.

Some members of the branch had reportedly quashed impeachment proceedings against the branch’s chairman, Mr. Mobolaji Ojibara, only for a statement to signed by the Assistant Secretary of the Association, Mr. Yahaya Alajo, to surface, claiming that the NBA branch chairman had been impeached.

Ojibara had been served an impeachment notice by 16 members of the body. The signatories had given the NBA Ilorin branch chairman, two weeks from the date of the receipt of the proposed impeachment notice to respond to allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.

The members during the proceedings of the impeachment on Monday, which was said to have been attended by the elders and members of the branch were said to have dismissed the allegations against Ojibara.

They were said to have decided that the allegations against Ojibara lacked merit and consequently quashed the impeachment proceedings.

Our correspondent gathered that some members of the branch were also recommended for some punitive measures including suspension.

The immediate past Chairman of the branch, Mr. Rafiu Balogun, in a telephone interview with our correspondent alleged that due process was not followed during the proceedings.

According to him, some of the members that either signed or seconded the impeachment notice were erroneously told that they were not qualified to sign the impeachment notice based on the argument that they had not fulfilled their financial obligations to the body.

He stated that they were also not allowed to show receipts or proofs of their financial worthiness to the branch.

Balogun also said the attendees at the proceedings were intimidated by the reported heavy presence of security officials.

But Ojibara said due process was followed in the proceedings, adding that the quashing or dismissal of the impeachment proceedings against him had vindicated him.

He stated that police officials were invited to the proceedings to maintain law and order as he claimed that they got information that some people could foment trouble during the proceedings.

However a twist later emerged as Alajo in a statement said Ojibara had been impeached.

The statement claimed the impeachment was approved at a general meeting attended by over 50 members.

It stated that the motion for the impeachment was moved by 16 members and seconded by 18 members which, it said was not opposed by any member of the branch who attended the meeting.

It added that since Ojibara had allegedly refused to react to allegations of financial recklessness, abuse of office and subversion of the association’s by-law, Ojibara remain impeached by the association

The statement expressed optimism that the purported Ojibara’s impeachment would bring peace and sanity to the llorin branch of NBA.

But Ojibara dismissed his purported impeachment in a telephone interview with our correspondent, adding that those behind the latest development were alleged suspended members of the association.
