Kwara, 13 other states may experience total blackout
The states are; Kwara, Kogi, Osun, Oyo, Edo, Ekiti, Delta states among others.
The picketing action, The Herald gathered was as a result of non-payment of entitlements to all the laid-off staff of the scrapped Power Holding Company of Nigeria(PHCN).
When The Herald visited some of the Electricity Distribution Companies business units in the state capital, they were under lock and key and there were presence of the executives of the state NLC and men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC) to ensure compliance.
Speaking with newsmen in Ilorin, the state Capital, the Chairman of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC), Comrade Faruq Umar Akanbi said the strike action embarked upon by the labour leaders was as a result of the failure of investors and the Federal Government to reach agreement with the Union to pay all the outstanding payments and emoluments to the laid-off staff.
He further explained that several meetings were held over labour related matters, Unionization of National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and their service in general to Nigerians but yielded no positive result.
Comrade Faruq, however expressed dismay over action of the investors and the Federal Government to meet the demands of labour, pointing out that electricity investors did not allow senior members to unionize with the National Union of Electricity Employee (NUEE).
He noted that the strike action by labour was to ensure justice and equity to their members working under Electricity Distribution Companies and put stop to victimization of members.
Comrade Faruq also observed with dismay that since the taking over of electricity supply by investors, there was no improvement on the power generation in the country.
He further explained that, all what investors were interested in was only to generate more money and distribute less power to the people.
Speaking, the state Chairman of the National Union of Electricity Employee (NUEE), Kwara State Branch, Comrade, Bamidele Okogbe, expressed dissatisfaction over the poor service, over billing, non payment of entitlement to all disengaged staff by the private investors and the Federal Government.
Comrade Okogbe, commended the state NLC, for coming to their aid over the issues affecting them, pointing out that the strike action was as a result of Federal Government, proclamation to Nigerians that they have paid all outstanding payment to all the disengaged PHCN staff.
He explained that, all the disengaged staff were yet to receive their housing allowance let alone of emolument from the Federal Government.
He disclosed that NUEE had lost eleven staff from last year till date due to the non-payment of their entitlement.
