NULGE suspends warning strike

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has suspended a three-day warning strike it started yesterday to protest the Senate's decision to remove autonomy for local government areas.

A press statement by the Public Relations Officer of the union Mohammed Shuaibu Oruma said the strike was suspended following the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tmabuwal, members of the House and NULGE's supporters in the Senate.

Oruma, in a short message to "all national officers, state presidents, secretaries of NULGE" said "I have been directed to inform you that as a mark of respect for Speaker and honourable members of House of Representatives and indeed our supporters from the Senate, the three days warning strikes have been put off. 

"Our members are therefore directed to continue their normal duties. We thank our supporters from the press and the general public for their cooperation and understanding "
The union had initially planned the strike to last between yesterday and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, as the strike was being called off, Local government workers in Kwara and Imo states yesterday observed the nationwide industrial action declared by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE).

In Kwara state DAILY TRUST correspondent who visited some local governments including Asa, Ilorin West, and Ilorin South yesterday observed that activities at the secretariats were at standstill as a result of the strike.

Secretary of NULGE, Comrade Abayomi Afolabi described the first day of the strike as a success, noting that the compliance by members was highly encouraging.

In Imo state, the chairman of the union Comrade A. I. Onuoha in a statement in Owerri, yesterday urging workers in the state to be fully involved in the strike which commenced today.
