Justice Joseph Fola Gbadeyan, a retired judge and former Chief Justice of Kwara State, is now heading a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the May 7 killing of security operatives at Alakyo near Lafia in Nasarawa State by persons suspected to be members of Ombatse, an Eggon group.

Two months on, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura set up the commission after political stakeholders and paramount rulers as well as religious leaders met at separate occasions to recommend for the investigation into the killings and other related happenings in the state.

"The concern shown and expressed by both citizens of Nasarawa State and other well-meaning Nigerians and, indeed, people in the Diaspora, and the peculiarity of the incident has made the setting up of this commission not only inevitable, but obligatory", the governor said as he swore in the Justice Gbadeyan-led commission on Wednesday.

He lamented that the widespread crisis that hit the state, and preceded the Alakyo killing set off a drawback on socio-economic activities, just as it portrayed the state in bad light.

"As a responsible administration, we cannot fold our arms and watch our well-earned, God-given state degenerate into one of anarchy. Indeed, violence is not in our culture," Al-Makura said.

The commission is mandated to among others "inquire into how and why despite its proscription vide Nasarawa State Legal Notice No.4 of 2012, Vol.15, the outlawed Ombatse Militia continues its activities unabated and continues to cause a breach of the peace in Nasarawa State."
