Bricklayer Remanded for Fraud
A 35-year-old bricklayer, Abubakar Mustapha of Mejindadi Area, Ilorin, who allegedly defrauded a man under the pretext of selling a land to him has been remanded at Federal Medium Security Prison, Mandala area, Ilorin.
The order to remand the accused was made by an Ilorin Magistrate Court before which he appeared on a two-count charge of advance fee fraud and criminal intimidation.
The accused was also said to have threatened to kill his victim if he ever requested for the refund of his money.
Trouble began for the accused when on April 9, 2013, the victim, Abdulkareem Adeoye of Alasela Street, Ilorin, lodged a complaint at ‘B’ Division Police Station, Surulere, Ilorin, that the accused defrauded him.
According to the victim, on March 6, 2011, the accused came to him that he has a plot of land at Galadima Area, along Airport Road, Ilorin to sell.
The victim stated further that the accused took him to the piece of land after which he collected the sum of N155, 000 from him with the promise that he will bring the document of the land to him.
The victim also said that when he got to the land to start building, he was driven away by the rightful owner of the land.
According to the victim, the accused intimidated to kill him after he (accused) converted the money to his own personal use.
Police First Information Report (FIR) on the matter stated that during investigation, the accused confessed to have committed the offences, which contradict Sections 1(3) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offence, Act 2006 and 397 of Penal Code Law.
The prosecutor, Sergeant Sanni Abdullahi objected to the bail of the accused. He prayed the court to remand him in prison custody until the outcome of the police investigation.
Magistrate M.F. Abikoye granted the oral application of the prosecutor and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Medium Security Prison, Oke-Kura, Ilorin, till the next adjourned date.
The case was adjourned till April 16, for further mention.
