OPINION: 2011 Revisited: How Belgore Brought Discipline and Calm to Kwara Politics. By Muhammed Musa

Date: 2026-05-05

Let me take a moment to remind people about Mohammed Dele Belgore (SAN) and the Belgore family as a whole. One thing that has always stood out about them is that they are not your typical political family. Their background is deeply rooted in professionalism, discipline, and a commitment to service.

They are known more as technocrats people who understand systems, who value structure, and who approach leadership with knowledge and calmness, not just noise.

And if we are being sincere with ourselves, this present century is no longer about the old style of politics. It is about capacity, competence, and clear thinking. The world is changing, and leadership is changing with it. People now want leaders who can actually solve problems, not just make promises. That is why technocrats are becoming more relevant than ever before.

Looking back at 2011, it was a very important time for Kwara State.

A lot of people were tired and looking for a new direction, something different from what they were used to. During that period, Belgore came forward, and many Kwarans saw him as someone who could truly bring change and move the state forward. There was a strong belief that he represented a break from the old system.

What made him even more unique was not just his vision, but the way he carried himself during the campaign. In a political environment where insults, tension, and aggressive behavior are common, Belgore chose a different path. He spoke to people with respect. He focused on issues rather than attacking opponents. He maintained a level of maturity that was rare at the time.

I can still remember how he would caution his supporters. He told them clearly not to rush or surround his campaign bus, not to create unnecessary tension, and not to turn politics into something violent or chaotic. That alone says a lot about his mindset. It showed that he valued order, peace, and the safety of the people above everything else.

His campaign was calm, organised, and issue-based. There was no need for insults or drama. Instead, it was about ideas, direction, and what he believed Kwara could become. That approach made many people respect him, even those who may not have fully supported him politically.

Even today, that style of leadership still stands as an example. It reminds us that politics does not always have to be dirty or aggressive. It can be done with dignity, respect, and a true desire to serve the people.

At the end of the day, what Kwara and even Nigeria as a whole needs is leadership that combines intelligence with humility, strength with calmness, and ambition with integrity. That is the kind of mindset people like Belgore have represented, and it is something worth remembering as we look toward the future.
