Woman Observing Purdah Declares for Kwara Central Senate Seat on PDP Platform
Hajia Halimat Hassan Zarruq, a woman who observes purdah, has announced her bid for the Kwara Central senatorial district on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 general elections.
Hailing from Balogun Fulani Ward 1 in Ilorin South Local Government Area, Zarruq is a veteran PDP member known for her extensive work in grassroots mobilisation and local political organising.
She made her ambition public through a statement distributed to journalists in Ilorin, the state capital, yesterday.
Her public service record includes working as a medical professional and serving on the Board of Trustees of the Kwara State Water Corporation, where she participated in the oversight of public utility operations.
In her declaration, she emphasised that her political pursuit centres on delivering "tangible benefits" to the people she seeks to represent.
She outlined her key priorities as inclusive governance, financial backing for artisans and small-scale enterprises, enhanced educational and healthcare access, and dedicated programmes targeting young people and women.
The aspirant also highlighted teacher welfare as a critical area demanding focused policy intervention.
She said, "We're focusing on youth and women development through advancing of empowerment initiatives, skills acquisition programmes, and economic opportunities. Also we're fostering harmony and strengthening social cohesion across all communities in Kwara central."
Her decision to contest has generated considerable interest within political circles, largely due to her observance of purdah, a religious and cultural tradition linked to modesty and restricted public visibility amongst certain Muslim women.
Political observers suggest that her candidacy may bolster existing campaigns for increased female political involvement, particularly across northern Nigeria where cultural and religious norms have traditionally shaped women's presence in public affairs.
Analysts noted that by pursuing elected office whilst upholding her religious practices, her campaign could question existing beliefs regarding the intersection of cultural traditions and political participation, possibly inspiring more women to pursue active roles in governance.
