A Nigeria Premier Football League Match-day 22 rescheduled fixture between Kwara United and Rivers United ended in a 1-1 draw but was overshadowed by crowd violence at the Ilorin Stadium.

The hosts, nicknamed the Afonja Warriors, took the lead in the 32nd minute through Samsudeen Mohammed and held on until stoppage time. However, a late rebound fell kindly to David Sholumade, who slotted home for the Port Harcourt-based side to ensure both teams shared the spoils.

The dramatic equaliser sparked unrest among sections of the home supporters, who reportedly descended on match officials and members of the visiting team. Objects were thrown within the stadium as tensions escalated.

During the fracas, Rivers United's General Manager, Chief Okey Kpalukwu, was reportedly assaulted and sustained injuries.

A decision is expected from the leadership of the Nigeria Premier Football League after reviewing the Match Commissioner's report.

In recent times, several topflight matches in Nigeria have witnessed similar disturbances, with clubs facing heavy fines and, in some cases, stadium bans due to supporters' misconduct. Teams such as Katsina United, Kano Pillars, Shooting Stars, and Akwa United have previously been sanctioned over similar incidents.
