Kwara Govt to Compensate Victims of Offa, Erin-Ile Violence

Date: 2013-02-18

The Sole Administrator of Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, Alhaji Isiak Abubakar, has said that the government would compensate victims of the recent Offa and Erin-Ile communal clash.

Abubakar   told the News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) in Offa  that  government was determined to  ameliorate the sufferings and the effect of the crisis on the victims.

He  described the effect of the three-day communal violence  as devastating, saying that his local government had  already got an interim assessment of the scale of damages.

"We are already receiving records of those that have claims of damages and something positive would be done as soon as records are compiled.

"Government has plans to adequately compensate the direct victims of the crisis," he said.

Abubakar, a former Permanent Secretary in the Government House, said that the government would also ensure adequate security in the two warring communities.

He said his primary objective was to promote unity between the two  communities as well as  ensure that peace was restored.

It will be recalled that the two neighbouring communities had engaged in violent clashes  leading to the sack of both Offa and Oyun local government executives.

A 24-hour curfew was also imposed in the two communities at the height of the violence.
