Eid-El-Kabir Prep Disrupted as Fresh Pepper Prices Surge in Ilorin Markets
Residents of Ilorin, Kwara State's capital, are adjusting their Eid-el-Kabir (Ileya) preparations amid a sharp rise in the cost of fresh pepper (Rodo ) in major markets, compounding financial strain on low-income households.
A market survey by reporter at the Tomatoes and Pepper Depot in Mandate Ultra-Modern Market, Adewole, revealed that the price surge has disrupted supply chains, with traders struggling to source sufficient fresh produce. Many retailers are now rationing stock or seeking alternative suppliers to meet demand.
Alhaji Sulyman Abubakar KK, a major pepper dealer at the market, cited worsening road conditions at Mokwa in Niger State and rising transportation costs as key drivers of the price increase. He explained that these factors have raised operational expenses, forcing vendors to pass costs to consumers.
The spike in pepper prices has become a critical concern for families planning traditional meals for the upcoming Friday celebration.
Alhaji KK explained that a 100kg bag of pepper, popularly called 'Rodo,' now sells for between N180,000 and N200,000, while the 50kg variant goes for about N150,000, and 25kg is priced between N60,000 and N70,000.
Interestingly, while pepper prices have soared, tomato prices have drastically fallen as a big basket of tomatoes that sold for N120,000 last year now sells for between N35,000 and N60,000 depending on quality and location.
Another trader, Alhaji Wahab Kennike, said the sharp drop in tomato prices is "nothing short of divine intervention".
Residents and traders alike are hoping for a quick improvement in supply routes and conditions, as
food prices continue to be a major concern ahead of the festive season.
