NUJ Kwara Chairman Calls for Media Accountability and Ethics Amid Press Freedom Celebrations
As journalists worldwide commemorate World Press Freedom Day 2025, NUJ Kwara State Council Chairman Abdulateef Ahmed has urged media practitioners nationwide to remain steadfast in their duty of holding governments accountable while adhering to professional ethics.
Speaking at an event marking the occasion in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, Ahmed emphasized that the media's role as a societal watchdog is enshrined in the constitution and must be upheld rigorously.
He stressed that journalists must continue fostering a peaceful and secure national environment while ensuring transparency by scrutinising public officeholders on behalf of citizens.
He also used the occasion to call for salary review through a legislation for media practitioners working in the state public organisations to enhance productivity.
Abdulateef Ahmed while advising security agencies and government establishments to see journalists as work partners, said a relationship devoid of harassment and intimidation is what is needed to move the country forward.
The event also featured aerobics to keep journalists physically fit and mentally alert.
The theme for the 2025 world press freedom day is reporting in the brave new world: the impact of artificial intelligence on the press and the media.
