'Nigeria is Food Deficient, relies on Importation'

Date: 2013-01-29

Nigeria has been described as a food deficient nation that has always depended on imported foods to survive in spite her production potentials in agriculture.

A Professor of Agricultural and Rural Extension in the University of Ilorin, Prof. Oluwasegun Adekunle, said this in his inaugural lecture. He was quoting a World Bank 2012 report.

According to him, half of the country's cultivable 71 million hectares of land is currently fetching the country an estimated $415 billion Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

Adekunle said Nigeria's economy that should depend on agriculture only contribute 40 percent of its GDP because her policies on agriculture were not programme-focused.

Also, he lamented that Nigerian farmers who are rural based still remain on the subsistence level using small plots and seven percent of the irrigable land relying on seasons' rainfall.

He blamed this failure on weak policies and the inability of successive administrations to address agricultural development problem.
