NSCDC handles 50 cases of gender-based violence in Kwara – Commandant
Commandant Umar Mohammed of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara Command, on Tuesday said their Gender Unit has effectively addressed 50 cases of domestic violence.
Mohammed said this at a one-day seminar organised by the Gender Unit to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in Ilorin.
He said that under his leadership, the Gender Unit handled 10 instances of physical assault, with several cases currently in court.
Mohammed said this reflected the command's commitment to seeking justice for gender-based violence victims.
He said the command was committed to eradicating gender-based violence in the state.
Mohammed said the NSCDC was ready to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to wage a comprehensive war against societal menace.
The Head of the Gender Unit, SC Rachael Dada, said their primary goal of raising awareness was to help distressed women and girls in the public domain.
She said that the initiative sought to bring together partners for constructive discussions on the challenges and opportunities involved in eliminating violence against women and girls in the society.
Ms Olaoye Olajumoke, National Human Rights Coordinator in Kwara, said there was the need to adopt and strengthen policies for the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women and girls at all levels.
She stressed the importance of designing mechanisms to eliminate discrimination against women and girls in both public and private spheres on sexual and other forms of exploitation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that those who graced the occasion included the Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA), CEO of GLOHWAC, and FIDA.
