2023: Kwara PDP Stakeholders Endorse Gubernatorial Candidate from the North
Stakeholders in the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State have endorsed the picking of the governorship candidate of the party from the northern part of the state ahead of the 2023 elections.
The development, according to THISDAY checks, might not be unconnected with various consultations and agitations ahead of the next elections in the state.
The endorsement emanated from an extensive caucus meeting of the leadership of the party led by the former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, which was held at his country home, GRA, Ilorin, on Saturday.
Sources close to the meeting told our correspondent that the meeting had in attendance of governorship aspirants of the PDP from Kwara Central Senatorial District and other stakeholders of the party across the three senatorial districts of the state.
Sources added that the meeting also involved 17 representatives each from the five local government council areas that make up the Kwara Central senatorial and other two senatorial districts of the state.
It was learnt that the stakeholders were said to have discussed extensively on the pro and con of picking its governorship candidate from the Kwara North Senatorial District in the next elections.
It was further gathered that, the party leadership was said to have taken the decision so as to assuage the feelings of the people of the Kwara north senatorial that had claimed to have tasted the office of the governor since 1991 when Senator Muhammed Shaaba Lafiagi from Lafiaji in Edu Local Government Council was elected the governor of the state under the banner of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
After the meeting it was gathered that the former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, M. Saka Issau (SAN) was said to have been directed by the leadership of the party to brief the whole house and was said to have received the overwhelming approval of the party members who had gathered at the Saraki’s House, GRA, Ilorin to know the outcome.
Sources, however, said that the former Senate President, was said to have directed the party stakeholders in the Kwara North senatorial district to go home and put their house in order and present sellable candidate out of about 10 governorship aspirants of the party from the zone.
