Firdaus/Law School saga: Kwara Speaker challenges Law School to end silence

Date: 2018-01-01

Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ali Ahmad has challenged the authority of the Nigeria Law School to respond to allegation of unlawful discrimination regarding to the Firdaus Amasa's case, noting that continuous silence beyond the next 30 days will have become unnaceptable.

This, Ahmad said became imperative with various reactions and counter-reactions that had trailed the incidence when Firdaus was denied opportunity to be called to Bar for her inability to remove her Hijab.

The Speaker who is an Associate Professor of Law bore his mind on the trending issue while fielding questions from Journalists in Ilorin at the weekend, describing the incident as unwarranted and unfortunate.

He recalled that when he was called to Bar in New York, he was dressed only in suit without the wig and gown and a few Muslim ladies doned their Hijab without let or hindrance.

" Law School may have contravened two Appeal Court judgements that held that Hijab is a fundamental right of willing Muslim women. So, I want to urge the Council of Legal Education and the Body of Benchers to urgently react to the Firdaus matter as their silence cannot be golden"

"However, I have confidence in the Committee of Justice of the House of Representatives, led by our own Rt. Hon. Razak Atunwa to drive at a just resolution of this matter in a timely fashion", he said.

Ahmad regretted that since Firdaus was not called to the Bar at the last programme, the situation has made her mates to be her senior in the legal profession.

However, the Speaker stressed that if being a junior to her colleagues is the price Firdaus would pay to resolve the lingering crisis at the school, it was worth it.

The legislator saluted the courage and doggedness of Firdaus in standing tall to fight for her right and rights of other Muslim ladies who are coming behind her.
