2017 Budget: Summit varsity VC advocate improved funding for varsities

Date: 2016-11-28

The Vice Chancellor of the Summit University, Offa in Kwara State, Professor Hussein Oloyede, has urged the National Assembly and the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocation in the education sector in the 2017 budget.

Professor Oloyede who made the call on Sunday in Ilorin, the State capital while featuring on a Radio Kwara personality interview programme, "Playing Host" as monitored by ROYAL NEWS noted that the budget accorded the education sector in the 2016 budget was crossly inadequate.

According to him, "More funds needed to be allocated for research works at the various institutions of learning so that universities can concentrate more on detailed research findings while universities should even be given mandates on specific researches in form of challenges.

The VC commended the Federal Government for establishing more private universities in the country stressing that it would go a long way in solving admission problems candidates face yearly but, however, cautioned the government against neglecting existing universities particularly in terms of infrastructural facilities.

Professor Oloyede added that the idea of establishing more universities was realistic as yearnings for university education have become astronomical while a responsive government must not deny its citizens the right to education.

The don however praised the efforts of the authorities of Nigerian Universities in imbibing knowledge in their students but lamented that what was presently lacking in university education was moral and therefore called for the teaching of morals as being inculcated in the curriculum of teaching at the Summit University.

He further commended the efforts of the Vice Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete Professor Abdulrasheed Na-Allah, for establishing a department of Entrepreneur in the university.

The VC stressed that the Summit University also has a similar idea but in a uniquely different manner which will make their students morally upright and be employers of labour and not job seekers.

He therefore called for the reorientation of the entire society so as to guide against us having destructive tendencies against each other while government at all levels must address poverty which according to him had led many people to be living a frustrated life.
