Labour Party wants Kwara Independent Electoral Commission to speak up on council polls

Date: 2016-08-16

The Kwara chapter of Labour Party (LP) has asked the Kwara Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) to clear the controversy surrounding the forthcoming local government polls.

The Secretary of the party, Mr AbdulKareem Onagun, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Monday.

He said that Kwarans needed to know the position of the state electoral body on the polls. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while the tenure of the current councils in the state would end in November, KWASIEC is yet to announce its programme on the conduct of the elections.

"it's high time a meeting is summoned by the KWASIEC. They should let us know where we are and where we are going as regards the conduct of the local government elections. "We have been holding meetings to chart a way forward on the issue in the party and we are expecting to have credible candidate to vie for the election from our end.

"We held two meetings last week on the issue. The issue is that Kwarans should be watchful and ensure they elect the right candidates that will add value to local council administration."

NAN recalls that the party had earlier inaugurated a 10-man committee in preparation for the local government polls.

The Party Chairman, Mr Bababola Johnson, had at the inauguration, told the committee to visit all local governments to create awareness and educate the electorate on their right to vote for the right candidates and the party.

NAN reports that stakeholders, particularly the opposition parties, are also bothered by speculation that the elections might be postponed. NAN
