Kwara PDP vows not to mock losing Olusola Saraki

Date: 2011-04-10

The PDP in Kwara may have won all the seats for the NASS in the state, but the party is not celebrating the victory. According to a party chieftain who pleaded anonymity, this is because the PDP would not like to be seen as celebrating the failure of the ACPN, led by Olusola Saraki, the governor's father. "Baba is still our father and mentor; celebrating this victory will be like mocking him and we don't want this to appear so because at the end of it all, Oloye remains highly revered by all of us; we love him still", he said.

The strongman of Kwara politics, Olusola Saraki,'Oloye' and his party, the ACPN, lost in yesterday's NASS election in his backyard, Ajikobi Ward, coming a distant third to the PDP. The ACPN, polled 2, 153 and 2, 204 votes in the senatorial and House of representatives respectively in the ward to place third behind ACN, which got 3, 816 and 2, 602 votes in the senatorial and house of representatives respectively, and PDP, with 5, 462 and 5, 215 votes in that order.

On the contrary, outgoing governor of the state Bukola Saraki has secured the Kwara Central senatorial seat, winning by 78, 799 votes. The ACN polled 53, 058, while the ACPN scored 32, 494 votes, and CPC getting 5, 928 votes. The Kwara Central senatorial district comprises of Asa, Ilorin East, Ilorin West and Ilorin South local government areas.

By 1:20pm today when the returning officer for the House of Representatives election in Ilorin West Federal constituency, Wase Madaki, completed the announcement of the results inside the conference hall of the Ilorin West Local Government secretariat located beside the Emir's palace, party agents were nowhere to be found to sign the result sheets, except that of the PDP. Madaki, however, said based on the laws governing the election, the unavailability of the party agents to sign the result sheets does not invalidate the results and election.

In similar vein, at the INEC headquarters located along Olorunsogo Road in Ilorin, the returning officer for the senatorial election, Stephen Billy Olajide, announced the results at about 2:30 pm. However, after the announcement, the ACN agent refused to sign the result sheet, claiming that it was unacceptable to his party and that it would be contested.
