57 in police net over Kwara cult clash
Kwara State Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Tunji Morounfoye, on Tuesday said about 57 suspects have been arrested in connection with the clash by alleged rival cult groups at the Kwara State Polytechnic on Wednesday.
Two dead persons - one headless - were discovered in a bush in Sango, Ilorin last Thursday morning.
Morounfoye, while speaking with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, said, "The law of this state which does not operate elsewhere spells ten years imprisonment plus a fine of N50,000 is still in place which the government is set to apply in the case at hand and any other one that cultists dare to stage anywhere in the state.
"Not only that, guardians, parents and landlords including anybody whose premises is used for operations by cultists in the state are also liable to the same prison terms and fines. This is to say every one has a duty to be on the lookout and report strange movements and gatherings in their environment to the police in order to stay out of trouble."
Meanwhile, leaders of thought and residents of Ilorin, have decried the beheading of a man and the killing of another at Sango, Ilorin.
The Kwara State Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr. James Foloranmi; Chairman, Inter-Religious Committee, Alhaji Muhammed Koro; National Vice President, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, Mr. Taiwo Otitolaye; and President, Afonja Descendant Union, Ilorin, Kwara State, Alhaji Olola Kasum, in telephone interviews with our correspondent, condemned the incident and called on the state government and security agencies to step up security in the state, especially in Ilorin metropolis.
