Kwara varsity VC tasks academics on research
VICE-Chancellor Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Professor AbdulRasheed Na'Allah has urged academics in Nigeria to justify the huge sum of money the nation daily commits into researches by churning out indigenous technologies that could place the country on a sound economic pedestal.
<>Na'Allah, while addressing participants at the annual colloquium and Congress of Nigerian Association of Mathematical Physics (NAMP) yesterday at Malete, said there must be a paradigm shift in academic conferences from mere issuing of "a chit chat" communiques to proffering workable solutions to some of the nation's challenges. The KWASU Vice Chancellor told his audience of their failure in moving forward the nation's indigenous technologies just as he queried the where about of the alleged huge sum of money committed into futile researches on Solar Energy in Nigeria in the 80s.
For him, research, which is one of the pivots of the mandates of universities the world over should be promptly embraced by Nigerian academics just as he said the outcome of such researches, must be practicable and relevant to the nation's economic growth to justify the huge investment on them.
Na'Allah said, "The responsibility of research is purely that of the academics anywhere in the world. Academics must not just sit in offices but must go out and collaborate with viable industries to tinker the way forward in developing our homegrown technologies. They must equally develop policies that can move the country forward.
"It is saddening to note that in Nigeria after conferences, communiques are not implemented."
