Unilorin poised to produce graduates with entrepreneurial skills

Date: 2015-09-15

The management of the University of Ilorin is working assiduously to produce graduates with entrepreneurial skills. This was disclosed last Wednesday (September 9, 2015) by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), at the 2014/2015 SIWES Projects Exhibition of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology students.

Prof. Ambali, who spoke through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research Technology and Innovation), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, said that the management of the University was committed to guaranteeing a better future for the institution's alumni.

The Vice-Chancellor also appreciated the staff and students of the Faculty for putting in their best as he described the action as very paramount. He pointed out that it was incumbent on the management of the University to provide the students with entrepreneurial skills as there is no more white collar job in the country. According to him, "There is no more white collar job virtually in the whole world. Your future can only be guaranteed with what you trained yourself with and how you have put that into practice".

In a chat with Unilorin Bulletin after the exhibition, the representative of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Sunday David Oguniyi, said that the experience the students gathered is to make them their own boss after graduation.

Prof. Ogunniyi also said that the action is part of the training programme for any Engineering student of the University as contained in the University curriculum. He appealed to the management for materials because most of the students spend their personal money to facilitate their projects.

Some of the projects on exhibition included the Better by far liquid soap and the Better by far disinfectant manufactured by the Chemical Engineering Unit; brake drum for cars manufactured from aluminum wastes by the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Unit, as well as the mp3 player produced from scrap computer system.

Others include extension boxes, first aid boxes as well as glassware (test tubes of various types and sizes) by the Central Workshop students. Meanwhile, the Coordinator of the 2014/2015 SWEP, Dr. Musiliu Sunmonu, appealed to the University management to accept the proposal from the Faculty so as to mass-produce the exhibited products.
