Kwara House want federal prison relocated
The Kwara State House of Assembly has urged the Military and Prison authorities to stop harassing residents around Oke-Kura Area in Ilorin West Local Government Area with immediate effect to enable them go about their normal business activities.
This is part of resolutions of the House while debating on a matter urgent public importance raised by a member representing Ilorin North West Constituency Hon. Abdul-Rafiu Abdul-Rahman calling for total relocation of the Federal prison Oke-Kura in Ilorin to its permanent site in Mandala in Asa Local Government Area.
The Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmad while ruling on matter of urgent public importance said the House though not dwelling on issues on the exclusive legislative list, but said the House had constitutional power and jurisdiction to direct if the activities of the Federal Agency affect the well-being of the people residing where such Federal Agency was situated.
The House according to the Speaker equally referred the other prayers of the legislator to the House Committee on Ethics, Privileges, Public Petitions and Judiciary for further consultations with other security agencies and to submit report within two weeks.
The lawmaker had among other things called for the relocation of Federal Prison in the heart of Ilorin to its permanent site in Mandala due to harassment and intimidation of innocent citizens by security personnel at the Oke-Kura Prison along Pakata road.
This according to him had caused untold hardship and hampered socio-economic activities of the residents of the area.
Most of the Legislators that contributed on the matter of urgent Public Importance emphasised the need for the Federal Government to take proactive step in relocating the Ilorin Federal Prison in Oke-Kura to its permanent site in Asa Local Government to forestall breakdown of law and order.
